Help bring the next generation of life-changing medical technology to patients worldwide.  The Senior Principal Scientist provides scientific leadership for new technology and products development in the Acute Care & Monitoring business unit. 

Specifically, the Senior Principal Scientist should have knowledge and experience in methodology and process of scientific exploration as well as technology development for medical devices.  Understanding and learning from clinicians what clinical problems we need to solve. In addition to expertise in technical field, a strong background in the area of physiology, patient monitoring, and/or hemodynamic monitoring is preferred.   Particularly, experience in early technology development in medical device is highly desired.

Attitude, be comfortable dealing with ambiguity, and to be confident about being able to apply business acumen to help make pragmatic trade-off decisions between time-to-market, product costs, product reliability, product features, and budget.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING AND OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED:

·       Responsible for discovering and understanding the clinical problem

·       Responsible for the initiation, design, development, execution, and implementation of scientific research projects.

·       Investigates the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions and products.

·       Plans and executes laboratory research.

·       Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the art principles and theories and may contribute to scientific literature and conferences.

·       May participate in development of patent applications.

·       May coordinate interdepartmental activities and research efforts

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required
  • Requires a University Degree and minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience


SPECIALIZED SKILLS OR EXPERIENCE: 

  • Experience in taking medical devices to market (from opportunity definition to commercialization) while building key partnerships and working with clinicians, vendors, key external partners.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to understand, condense and distill key issues of complex clinical problems while at the front-line (ORs, clinics, field) and through customer discovery processes.
  • Experience in setting up and running animal studies, clinical research studies, and clinical trials across multiple locations (within the US and internationally)
  • Track record of successful fund-raising for different med-tech projects 
  • At least 3 years of experience in determining impactful clinical needs that meet the strategic and organizational goals of the unit.
  • 3 – 5 years of experience working in a matrix management structure 
  • Flexibility in working hours to accommodate collaboration across geographies.


NICE TO HAVE

  • Qualifications: 
    • The degree should be in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related areas. 
    • The degree should showcase practical work in front-end engineering through solving significant clinical gaps in current and novel markets.  
  • Management
    • Experience managing junior and senior engineers including vendors, and manufacturers – creating a mission driven culture across groups. 
    • Experience in financial modeling, budget management and forecasting
    • Experience in assembling and managing a team of experts with varied domain expertise.
    • Experience mentoring reports to nurture their interest, understand their strengths, ,areas of improvement and goals 
  • Clinical expertise
    • Strong background in clinical study development and execution 
    • Experience in rigorous iterative product development tied with clinical experimentation, validation, and feedback. 
    • Strong interest in human anatomy and physiology
    • Understanding of the human cardiovascular and respiratory systems
    • Ability to grasp medical concepts with ease and depth.  
  • Business acumen
    • Familiarity with business model and plan development and iteration
    • Successfully facilitated funding from donor organizations or within the organization for personal or corporate projects
    • Track record of conducting market analysis and customer discovery leading to new project areas
    • Experience in value-based healthcare models
    • Expertise in patent landscape analysis and the patent application process.
    • Familiarity with FDA regulations and ISO standards in medical device development and IEC standards for software development 
  • Technological expertise
    • Strong background in human-centered design and user-centered design
    • Ability to distill core engineering principles for application in early concepts
    • Prowess with rapid prototyping and design of experiments for a rigorous data-driven approach to product development
    • Experience with model development and simulation studies
    • Experience in lean product development and agile development methods 
    • Firm understanding of mathematics and linear algebra used in computational modeling.
    • Experience with Machine Learning, and Deep Learning networks
    • Experience with digital signal processing
    • Experience with Python, C++, and Matlab coding
    • Experience in medical device productization – quality system management, regulatory submissions, manufacturing, and iterative product development
    • Application of techniques such as Reinforcement Learning, Transferred Learning, Computer Vision, Image Segmentation, and PCA 
  • Organizational and soft skills
    • Proven track record in developing relationships and collaborating with an international set of varied partners.
    • Communication skills that bridge varying roles within the company, hierarchy within the organization, and external partners

The provided base salary range is used nationally (except in certain CA locations). The rate offered is compliant with federal/local regulations and may vary by experience, certification/education, market conditions, location, etc.​
