Our Purpose
At our Medtronic, plc, R&D (Research & Development) Department in Galway, Ireland, we focus on the development of cutting-edge medical devices in the Coronary, Structural Heart, PVH, Cardiac Rhythm Management and Neuromodulation space. Our R&D Engineers in Galway are directly involved in working on the development of innovative products for use in medical procedures.
The Structural Heart and Aortic Integrated operating unit offers minimally invasive approaches to restore proper structure and function of the heart and the aorta. We are focused on the transcatheter replacement or repair of the four heart valves – aortic, pulmonic, mitral, tricuspid – and the placement of stent grafts to treat aneurysms and dissections of the body’s largest artery, the aorta.

A Day in The Life Of:
- Design and develop new medical devices from initial concept phase through design freeze, verification, and validation and finally into commercialization phase.
- Work from basic clinical need through opportunity assessment and device concept to prototype.
- Effectively represent Medtronic while interacting with physicians to distil their needs into product requirements and concepts.
- Participate in technical innovation across the department.
- Identify and mitigate technological risks throughout the design process.
- Apply understanding of anatomy & physiology with engineering knowledge in materials and processes to produce working designs.
- Interface effectively and build relationships with team members, other staff and key technology and component suppliers, both locally and globally
- Contribute to resolution technical obstacles with existing designs and support portfolio sustaining activities.
- Contribute to generation of intellectual property.
- Coach, mentor, and delegate/direct work of less experienced engineers.
- Partake in cross site Technical Forums and build a network within the technical community.
Key Skills & Experience
- Level 8 Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering or related discipline with minimum 5 years relevant direct engineering experience within medical device environment
- You are a dynamic team player and can work effectively and proactively on cross-functional teams and across organizational boundaries and take appropriate actions when problems occur.
- You are an experienced professional in engineering development and can take ownership of a complex body of technical work in some or all of the following: component and system design, materials (polymers and metals), sterilization of medical devices, test method development, design for six sigma principles, CAD (Solidworks preferred), pre-clinical evaluations, physician interactions, knowledge of anatomical use conditions (anatomy, physiology etc.), system requirements development, design control, DOE (Design of Experiments), Six Sigma, DFM, application of ISO standards for medical devices
- Medical device product development experience desirable
- Experience in interfacing with physicians and translating feedback into device concepts.
