At our R&D Department in Medtronic Neuromodulation, we focus on the development of cutting-edge medical devices in the Neuromodulation area. Interventional Pain develops minimally invasive therapies that treat musculoskeletal pathologies such as vertebral compression fractures, metastatic and benign bone tumors, and nerve pain.
A Day in the Life
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
- Designs, develops and tests minimally invasive procedures in bone and soft tissue per medical device standards and internal procedures.
- Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints.
- Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal.
- Maintains and monitors commercially released products on an as needed basis.
- Participates in design reviews and technical drawing reviews.
- Writes and executes hardware and software verification and validation protocols.
- Writes test reports documenting verification and validation.
- Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, evaluates alternatives including cost and risk, supportability and analyses for total systems.
- Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.
- Formulates, delivers and/or manages projects assigned and works with other stakeholders to achieve desired results.
- Makes adjustments or recommends enhancements in systems and processes to solve problems or improve effectiveness of job area.
- May act as a mentor to colleagues or may direct the work of other lower-level professionals.
- Bachelors degree in Engineering required
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 0 years of experience
Nice to Have
- Knowledge of SolidWorks (parametric modelling, assembly, and drafting), metal machining and materials, injection molding and polymer flow/behavior, design for machining and over-molding, finite element analysis (ANSYS Mechanical, CFD, Multiphysics preferred)
- Knowledge of heat and mass transfer, basic electrical engineering principles, and interaction between electrical currents and biological tissue
- Solid knowledge of anatomy with focus on central nervous system/spinal cord
- Foundation in applied mathematics and lumped modelling approach of transient problems
- Dynamic team player who can work effectively and proactively on cross-functional teams.
- Strong interpersonal, leadership and team skills
- History working in regulated industries such as medical or defense or ability to quickly embrace and learn and follow policies and procedures that comply with regulations and standards from FDA and CE
- Experience Medical device technology, ideally in neuromodulation, processing knowledge and medical device design procedures
- Track record in innovative design, product development and manufacturing.
- Experience designing small parts, assemblies of small parts, RF ablation probes, machined bone access tools and balloon catheters
- Knowledge of electrical safety testing and troubleshooting failures as well as electrical safety standards
- Solid knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and ASME Y14.5 standard
- Basic knowledge of software development and computer programing (functional and object oriented)
- In depth knowledge of materials used in medical device applications (metals, polymers, shape memory, hyperelastic, etc.)
- In depth knowledge of process engineering and troubleshooting methodology in a regulated environment (statistics is a plus)

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico. Base pay is based on numerous factors and may vary by job-related knowledge, skills, experience, etc. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
