The Global IP Administrative Manager will be responsible for managing all Medtronic patent paralegals and administrative staff. The Administrative Manager will be an integral member of Medtronic’s Chief IP Counsel’s leadership team, and will work across the enterprise to ensure that our IP staff operates at the highest-level of consistency and efficiency in a seamless manner. The Global IP Administrative Manager will work closely with the Head of IP in each Medtronic business or region to ensure that their IP administrative needs are met. The Administrative Manager will face challenges and issues that are difficult and undefined, and that require detailed information gathering, analysis and investigation, and proposing and implementing solutions that are best in the class for a world class IP organization. The Global IP Administrative Manager will report to a senior member of the IP leadership team and will work closely with other legal leaders across Medtronic. 

The Senior Global IP Administrative Manager position can reside in any of the following locations: California, Colorado, Connecticut or Minnesota.

A Day in the Life:
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
  • Manages all global patent workflows in which resources are optimally utilized.
  • Plans, initiates, monitors, tracks and/or prioritizes IP administrative projects and process improvement initiatives, and facilitates successful, on-time and within budget execution.
  • Directs day to day activities for multiple work-stream teams through managing project plans, resourcing, status reporting, resolving issues, identifying project risks and accountability for deliverables across multiple functional organizations.
  • Establishes meaningful metrics and tracks progress against them.
  • Responsible for project performance, risk management, administration, financial management, budgeting and issue resolution within the IP function.
  • People Management: 
    • Oversees IP legal assistant and paralegal services for Medtronic’s IP organization.
    • Manages performance, develops talent, drives engagement and inclusion.
    • Plans, prioritizes and directs responsibilities of direct reports.
    • Accountable for mentoring, developing and coaching staff in meeting/exceeding performance expectations and defined objectives.
    • Provides leadership to staff to ensure prioritization of strategic and department level initiatives to include defining performance goals and targets, conducting performance reviews, and staff 1:1s to guide performance management and employee development efforts and manage toward departmental goals.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Travel requirement: 20-30%.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • 7+ years of legal experience 
  • 5+ years of managerial experience managing IP paralegals and administrative staff
  • Experience with a docketing platform, preferably Anaqua™ IP asset management system, electronic invoicing systems and USPTO online business systems
  •  Knowledge and experience of: (1) patent docketing; (2) trademark docketing; (3) IP organization operation; (4) patent and trademark budget and ability to administer it
