The Medtronic Engineering & Innovation Centre has a position available for an Engineering Manager to lead  the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning group activities at the center. The role would report into the Director of Software Engineering at MEIC. The candidate will provide functional leadership to an engineering group responsible for AIML- Data Engineering across the various OUs and enterprise functions that MEIC has partnership with. Primarily, the job will require leadership on cross functional integration between R&D, Quality, IT across the operating units in development and implementation of AI based Initiatives. He/She will be responsible for successful implementation of major, strategic data science and artificial intelligence programs and initiatives. The individual would be accountable for the management of the projects within span of engagement at MEIC, aligning cross functional resources on strategic project goals and timelines, reporting progress and project costs, developing relationships with other OU R&D teams who can provide strategic partnership in the development process, preparing and monitoring annual budgets, championing teams and creating a culture of success.  

The critical role requirements are :

  • Technical Experience: Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning critical experience.
  • Familiarity with :
    AI/ML/DL software suites and parallel computing platforms like Pytorch, Sagemaker, 
    Healthcare data background as a requirement such as GDPR/HIPAA, FHIR, HL7, imaging (DICOM),
  • Product development experience.
  • People management critical experience 


A Day in the Life

  • Grow, sustain and enhance the AI Engineering function. Be part of Global R&D organization and will direct the AI initiatives at MEIC, leading engineering teams in the successful development of programs that are required to support the strategic plan; 
  • s/he will ensure each project has the proper technical engagement to provide guidance early and often in the development process to ensure optimal delivery. s/he will ensure proper technical reviews of projects at each phase gate. 
  • Facilitates good cross functional, cross project team, and cross business communication and coordination to ensure successful completion of projects.
  • Oversees team development of algorithms in step with project deadlines.
  • Guides the conceptualization and experimentation of new methodologies, processes or products with the goal of producing business growth.
  • Directs the development of new concepts from initial research and design to the point of hand off with functional partners.
  • Acts as an advisor to staff members to meet project requirements and to resolve technical problems.
  • Responsible for helping in setting direction for the group, aligning with organizational goals and objectives, and ensuring consistent work direction within the group.
  • Collaborate with the senior development staff in leading direction, objectives, initiatives, strategy, and issue resolutions. 
  • Engage with peer managers concerning projects, people, and process.
  • Creates and maintains procedures that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the department.
  • Oversee Clinical investigations
  • Coordinates with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure timely delivery.


Education:

  • Required: Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Technology in Computer Sciences, Electronics or Electrical Engineering, Bio-Technology,  or Equivalent from a premium institute.
  • Preferred: Maters in Engineering or Masters in Technology Computer Sciences, Masters in Data Engg/ AIML or related engineering   or Equivalent from a premium institute.

Required Skills/Competencies:

  • Minimum of 15+ years of industry experience in Sofware or related field
  • Minimum of 5+ years of  applicable experience (data science, engineering, data analysis, AI/ML initiatives)
  • Minimum 5+ years of Engineering management along with critical people and project management.
  • Knowledge of key concepts in machine learning and predictive analytics (Deep Learning Methods/Frameworks, Sampling)
  • Production and deployment of machine learning models to cloud and edge devices
  • Advanced knowledge of software development 
  • Skills in cross platform Linux/Windows and shell scripting bash/PowerShell
  • Familiarity with data pipelines, data wrangling, and big data technologies (e.g. Spark and Hadoop)
  • Practical knowledge of how to build efficient end-to-end ML workflows, 
  • Data collection considerations for medical devices
  • Self-driven with excellent management, coaching, and leadership skills.
  • Proven ability to build relationships and effectively influence peers and management
  • Ability to present complex problems in a simple way
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to tailor to audience
  • Ability to communicate aspects of the project and filter messaging based on the target audience
  • Ability to quickly switch between details and the big picture
  • Ability to work under pressure and with tight timelines
  • Experience driving and delivering critical project features which involve integration with multiple different teams
  • Passion for and proven ability to quickly understand technical concepts in a wide range of fields
  • Ability to create and execute plans in ambiguous settings
  • The position requires a highly collaborative individual with program management critical experience and an understanding of the environment, processes and tools required for efficient and effective delivery of innovative and high-performance medical devices and health care provider solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, negotiating; managing change; goal setting; planning and organizing teamwork; ability to address difficult situations;
  • Must possess managerial courage; must be confident managing risks and making decisions that will likely have a large impact on organizational objectives;
  • Good financial acumen; strong mathematical and financial capabilities;
  • Demonstrated experience managing a large, diverse technical department with budgetary responsibility;
  • Must have leadership skills and personal strength to protect projects from unsubstantial change requests while ensuring project focus remains in place;
  • Fluency in English;

  • Up to 15 % travel internationally and domestic


Principal Working Relationship

The individual would work closely with other cross functional teams to ensure proper communication, resource management, and skill development across departments.  Builds trusting relationships with Global R&D leadership including regional and corporate organizations where needed; is the primary contact for the Engineering R & D function.

  • M.Tech preferred with major in AIML- Data Science/ Engg.
