Senior R&D Engineer

As a Senior Design Engineer, you will design and develop complex and innovative customized solutions of spinal medical device products. You will actively seek out Voice of the Customer (VOC) input and rapidly translate that into product requirements, design specifications, and mechanical concepts.  You will work under general direction and may serve as technical mentor for younger engineers.  The product focus will be on customized spinal implants and instrumentation to treat degenerative, deformity, and tumor/trauma conditions. 
Day in the life: 
•    Gathers customer input and understands use conditions of surgeon requests for customized instruments and implants.
•    Conceptualizes complex instrumentation and implant designs or modifies existing complex designs that meet the expectations and uses of the customer.
•    Provides technical leadership in the definition, evaluation, and risk analysis of instrument and implant designs. This includes understanding system interfaces, use cases and conditions, investigating and resolving system and design issues, making improvements to address customer feedback and requests, and leading testing activities. 
•    Defines and performs verification and validation activities ensuring products meet user needs and intended use.
•    Prepares models for 3D printing, electronic transfer, simulations, and presentations 
•    Creates drawings and works with procurement group for manufacturing of designs.
•    Ensures personal understanding of all quality policy/system items that are applicable.  Follows all work/quality procedures to ensure quality system compliance and high-quality work.
•    Utilizes computer-aided design tools (CAD), primarily Pro-E/Creo.
•    Utilizes computer information systems to process and store design information.
•    Experience in product concept development, functional analysis, use case and condition identification, interface definition and control, verification and validation on a cross functional team on complex projects.
•    Able to conceptualize ideas based on set of identified needs and requirements.
•    Strong collaborator in a cross-functional team environment.
•    Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
•    Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.

Must Have: Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors degree required
- 4+ years of experience with Bachelors Degree  OR 2+ years of experience with an Advanced Degree

Nice to Have 
•    Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or technically related degree – Mechanical Engineering preferred
•    4+ years of engineering experience
2+ years of medical device experience – preferably trauma, orthopedics, or dental 
•    Proficiency with CREO, SolidWorks, or similar 3D CAD program
•    Proficiency with drawing standards including GD&T and tolerance stacks
•    In-depth knowledge of Spinal anatomy relative to surgical procedures for specific products.
•    Ability to effectively communicate and work cooperatively with others as a lead member of a team.
•    Demonstrated experience sharing information, status, needs, and issues with others in order to inform, gain input, and support decision-making.
•    Expertise in medical device development (spine or ortho) and related processes.
•    Equipment and tooling design for new products.
•    Experience with material processing and testing: Titanium, Cobalt Chrome, Stainless Steel
•    Deep manufacturing knowledge of machining and 3D printing.
•    Experience working in a FDA regulated and/or medical device environment with ISO and Quality System Regulation requirements
